9/11 Memory & Service 25 Years Later
As we mark 25 years since September 11, Community-Engaged Alliance invites you to a special webinar exploring how we remember 9/11 and how those memories continue to shape our understanding of its history and human impact.
Featuring Marita Sturken, PhD, professor at New York University and scholar of cultural memory and memorialization, and Lynn Hallarman, MD, health-science journalist and palliative care physician, the conversation will examine 9/11 memorials, the stories of responders, and the ongoing health consequences of the World Trade Center attacks.
Join us for an opportunity to reflect on memory, service, and civic responsibility 25 years later.
Speakers
Marita Sturken, PhD, professor in the Department of Media, Culture, and Communication at New York University and author of Terrorism in American Memory: Memorials, Museums, and Architecture in the Post-9/11 Era, will explore how 9/11 memorials contextualize the attacks and how acts of memorialization influence our understanding of historical catastrophes. She was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2023.
Lynn Hallarman, MD, is an independent health-science journalist and palliative care physician. She spent over a decade leading the Division of Palliative Medicine at Stony Brook Medicine (2007-2019). Since 2019, she has worked as a reporter and as a consultant to the National Center for Equitable Care for Elders at Harvard University. Lynn is the 2025 first-place recipient from the New York Press Association for local reporting. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, The Guardian, The Boston Globe, AEON and more. For the 25th anniversary of the World Trade Center attacks and in collaboration with the national podcasting show Reveal and Mother Jones, Lynn follows the lives of two 9/11 responders sickened by toxic "World Trade Center dust" and the fight to commemorate the health disaster that, for many, has never ended. Her work with Reveal and Mother Jones is supported by the Center for Health Journalism USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism.
