2023 Preconference Sessions

Take your learning to the next level by attending a Summit & Research Symposium Preconference session!

Choose from one of the following 3-hour sessions, each taking place on Wednesday, April 19th from 12:30 PM to 3:30 PM at the NCAA Hall of Champions and Conference Center. Registration for each session is an additional $50, which includes all materials and lunch prior to each session from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM.

Centering Community in Community Engagement

Presented by Paul Schmitz, CEO of Leading Inside Out

In this interactive session, Paul will share practices that shift our focus from centering our own work and institutions to centering community in community engagement. The audience will learn how to build authentic and effective community partnerships and analyze the system barriers that often get in the way and need to be overcome.

Paul Schmitz builds the collective leadership of organizations and communities to achieve greater social impact through his roles as Senior Advisor at The Collective Impact Forum and CEO of Leading Inside Out. He is also the author of Everyone Leads: Building Leadership from the Community Up, and the former CEO of Public Allies, where he helped more than 5,000 diverse young adults begin careers working for community and social change. Paul is a faculty member of The Asset-Based Community Development Institute, was a social innovation advisor to the Obama White House, and has been named three separate years to The Nonprofit Times list of the 50 most influential nonprofit leaders in America. He lives in Milwaukee, Wisconsin with his wife and five children.

Developing a Tempered Radicals Approach to Advancing Justice in Community Engagement Programming

Presented by Buck Cooke, Executive Director at Break Away

Based on over 30 years of student leadership training experience, Break Away presenters share ideas and practices on how to find and navigate the line of upholding institutional power structures while advocating against them to create more equitable spaces for all. Utilizing a tempered radical approach, recognizing that sustainable change may move slowly at risk-averse institutions, this workshop provides leadership educators with practical and strategic tools to help campuses move closer to justice while avoiding political pitfalls and enhancing needed coalitions.

Buck Cooke is the Executive Director at Break Away, an organization supporting thoughtful community engagement through justice-based trainings and programs. Buck joined the Break Away team in February 2022, bringing over 20 years of experience in higher education administration and nonprofit organization management. He worked in a variety of functional areas in student affairs, including orientation, residence life, student activities, leadership development, community service, and student government on a variety of campuses, including Emory University, Auburn University Montgomery, and Richmond, the American International University in London. Buck spent most of his career advising sororities and fraternities, including a decade at the Georgia Institute of Technology, leaving the institution as Assistant Dean of Students/Director of Sorority and Fraternity Life. In the nonprofit sector, Buck worked as the executive director of the Atlanta Pride Committee and Pets Are Loving Support and served as director of development for Jerusalem House. Buck earned his MS at Florida State University in higher education administration and his BA in mass communication from Winthrop University.

Registration for a Preconference Session may be added to any Summit & Research Symposium Registration type for an additional $50. This includes all session materials and an attendee lunch served from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM prior to the start of each session. Registration options can be accessed using the link below.
